GreenTick® ..Beginnings..

GreenTick® Certification is the result of a four-year, privately funded research project into a system for independent sustainability certification. The project was carried out in New Zealand by a team of experienced environmental engineers, scientists, and planners.

The project's aim was to design a workable system for independent sustainability certification. GreenTick® had to meet the international standards for sustainability (ISO 17000), whilst also providing a practical system for certification across many industries. GreenTick® had to be easy to use, and easy to recognise in the marketplace.

The solution was to use a visually powerful logo - a 'Green Tick' - linked to a generic series of safety and sustainability standards. These provide "cradle-to-grave" coverage across a product's manufacturing cycle, and can be objectively re-assessed year after year.

A series of eight safety and 12 sustainability standards are used because of the international trend towards the combination of health, safety and environmental quality standards; and because it was just too difficult, time-consuming, controversial, and impractical to attempt to come up with prescriptive
standards for every single industry!

We had direct contact with ISO's Head of the Conformity Assessment Committee (CASCO) in Geneva (a New Zealander and past colleague), during the development of Green Tick®. As far as we know, this is the world's first sustainability certification system designed to meet the ISO standards, and designed to work in practical terms for industry.

The ISO standards require that the certifying authority (Green Tick®) be completely separate from the assessing authorities, and so we are now seeking to gather together a group of experts (Call for Certifiers) in sustainability assessments who can offer these services across various industries.  We are also interested in participating in "best practice" projects and research into sustainability matters. We are members of New Zealand's Sustainable Business Network.

We hope that Green Tick
® will be adopted by industries worldwide.  Then, consumers will know instantly that a product with a "Green Tick®" on it has been independently verified as genuinely "sustainable".

We believe that companies that operate in a sustainable manner will endure in the long run, and that there are obvious financial, ethical, and management benefits in sustainable business practices...not in the least the customer's assurance that the product they are buying is genuinely "clean and green"..
