Damara Lamb Meat – Summary of Trial Results |
In August 2004, the Department of Primary Industry (DPI), Toowoomba, Queensland, and Green Tickä Certification Limited agreed to trail Green Tickä Natural eco-label on Damara lamb meat from three selected properties in western Queensland. These farms had completed their first round of a pastoral environmental management system, and it was thought that they were likely to achieve the performance standards required for certification. |
Staff of DPI assisted the farmers to put together the records and systems required to meet certification standards, and in July-August 2005 an independent agricultural auditor examined the farms’ records and production practices for sustainability. Independent tests of lamb meat for pesticide residues and other artificial substances were undertaken, and the test lambs tested clear of these residues. |

Certification was granted, and the lamb meat made available for sale in three Brisbane specialist butcher shops from 15 August 2005. |
Results of the certification trial and market responses to Green Tickä Natural certification will be reported formally at the 10th European Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production in Antwerp, Belgium, 5-7 October 2005; and at the International Sustainability Conference at Basel, Switzerland, 13-15 October 2005. |
